How this calculator works

This calculator estimates how long a household can sustain assisted living costs, given a combination of income and liquid assets. It uses a time-based approach: each month, the gap between monthly cost and monthly income is drawn from the asset pool. The asset pool earns a return (your investment yield assumption), while costs and income grow at their respective annual rates. When the asset pool reaches zero, the timeline ends.

The national median for assisted living is approximately $6,200 per month as of 2026, according to the CareScout Cost of Care Survey. Costs typically increase 3–5% annually. Most households fund assisted living through a combination of Social Security or pension income, savings, and home equity proceeds.

This calculator is for estimation only. It does not account for taxes, Medicaid spend-down, changes in care level, or other individual circumstances. For complex financial planning, consult an elder law attorney or certified financial planner.
